The countryside tour covers the west and centre of Bohol in a day and gives most visitors everything they came for. It also means the eastern half of the island, which is bigger, emptier, and in places better, gets seen by almost nobody on a short trip.
If you have a second or third day for the mainland, this is where it should go. Everything here is a longer drive than the standard loop, so pick one or two rather than trying to chain them.
Anda is a town on the far eastern tip of Bohol, roughly two and a half to three hours from Panglao. Quinale Beach is a long stretch of white sand with almost nothing built on it, no vendors working the sand, and on a weekday very few people.
It is what people imagine Alona Beach is before they arrive at Alona Beach. The sand is comparable, the water is calm, and the difference is that nobody is trying to sell you a boat trip.
The honest caveat is the drive. Three hours each way for a beach when you have a pool at the villa is a hard sell as a day trip. Anda earns its distance as an overnight, one or two nights, on the way to or from the rest of the east coast.
Near Anda, a limestone sinkhole opening into clear cold water several metres below ground level, with a wooden platform to jump from. There are several of these around Anda, including Combento and Canawa Cold Spring in nearby Candijay, and Cabagnow is the best known.
Entry is a small local fee, usually under ₱100. Bring a towel, water shoes, and cash. There are limited facilities and no lifeguards, so this is a swim-at-your-own-judgement stop rather than a managed attraction. Go in the morning when the light comes down through the opening.
The tallest waterfall in Bohol at around 60 metres, dropping into a pool you can swim in, with rice terraces on the approach. About two and a half hours from Panglao, and often combined with Anda and Cabagnow in one long day or an overnight.
Water volume varies a lot by season. In the dry months of March and April it can be a thin curtain. After rain it is a serious fall. If a waterfall is the reason for your drive, go between July and November.
Roughly two and a quarter hours north of Panglao, in the town of Danao, which is a different Danao from the barangay on Panglao where the villas are. Worth clarifying with a driver, because both exist.
The main event is The Plunge, a canyon swing that drops you around 200 metres into a river gorge on a rope arc. There is also a zipline across the canyon, a cable car, caving, and kayaking. Budget somewhere around ₱700 to ₱1,000 for the swing.
This is the best day on Bohol for teenagers, and probably the worst for anyone who does not want to watch a family member step off a platform. It is a full day given the drive.
The Carmen viewing deck is the famous one and it is busy from mid-morning. Two alternatives are quieter.
Sagbayan Peak is a smaller park with a viewing platform looking over its own set of hills, about 20 minutes from Carmen. Fewer people, a slightly less dramatic panorama, and a much more relaxed hour.
Alicia Panoramic Park in the east is a different proposition again. The hills here are greener and steeper, and you walk up rather than climb a staircase to a deck. It is a proper short hike of an hour or so and the reward is a view almost nobody in your hotel will have seen. Around two and a half hours from Panglao.
If a full eastern day is too much, two falls sit within about an hour of Panglao.
Mag-Aso Falls in Antequera is the more developed of the two, with steps down to a twin cascade and a swimming pool at the base. Roughly an hour and ten from Danao.
Camugao Falls in Balilihan is quieter and a rougher walk in, which is exactly why it is quieter. Similar drive time.
Both are half-day trips, which makes them the realistic option on a day when nobody wants to be in a van for six hours.
A small island off Anda with caves used as burial and ritual sites, and red hematite markings on the rock. Access is by a short boat crossing with a local guide, and the site is treated as sacred, so it is a guided visit with rules rather than a wander.
Include it if you are already staying in Anda. It is not a reason to drive three hours on its own.

The east of Bohol is a set of long days, and long days are much easier from a base with a kitchen, a pool, and somewhere to sit afterwards that is not a hotel lobby.
